Early life

Born on 9 May 1907 in Berlin, Germany, Baldur Benedikt von Schirach was the son of Carl von Schirach and Emma Middleton Tillou. He studied at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, where he was influenced by the rising Nazi movement. His aristocratic background and early exposure to nationalist ideology shaped his eventual role as leader of the Hitler Youth.

Career

In 1931, von Schirach was appointed Reichsjugendführer, leading the Hitler Youth until 1940. He directed propaganda films such as the 1935 film Triumph of the Will and the 1933 film Our Flags Lead Us Forward. In 1940, he became Gauleiter of Vienna and was responsible for deporting 65,000 Jews to concentration camps. He also organized the evacuation of German children before British bombings in 1940.

Personal life

Von Schirach married Henriette von Schirach, and they had four children: Richard, Robert, Klaus, and Angelika Benedikta. His sibling Rosalind von Schirach is documented. His son Richard von Schirach and his family reside in Drottningholm, Sweden, near the Swedish royal family.

Legacy

Baldur von Schirach was convicted at the Nuremberg trials for crimes against humanity. He was awarded medals including the Golden Hitler Youth Badge and Iron Cross. Despite his defense that he knew nothing of extermination camps, his role in deporting Jews from Vienna remains a dark legacy. He died on 8 August 1974 in Kröv, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, and is remembered for leading the Hitler Youth and as a key Nazi figure.
