TL;DR

Tony Blair became the youngest British Prime Minister in 200 years when he took office at age 43 in 1997. He led the Labour Party to three consecutive majority governments, a historic first. His centrist ‘Third Way’ policies reshaped British politics, but his decision to join the 2003 invasion of Iraq remains controversial. Who is Tony Blair?

BIOGRAPHY

Tony Blair — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Tony Blair’s father Leo Blair worked as a barrister and law lecturer; the family moved from Edinburgh to Durham after his birth on May 6, 1953. His mother Hazel Corscaden came from Ballyshannon, County Donegal. At the Chorister School in Durham, Blair met future comedian Rowan Atkinson. A scholarship took him to Fettes College. At Oxford’s St John’s College, he studied law and graduated in 1975. He was called to the Bar from Lincoln’s Inn in 1976 and practiced as a barrister. At Oxford, he sang and played guitar in Ugly Rumours.

Career

Blair lost his deposit as Labour candidate in the 1982 Beaconsfield by-election, but won the Sedgefield seat in the 1983 general election, becoming an MP. Within eleven years he was party leader, becoming Prime Minister in 1997 at age 43, the youngest since 1812. His three terms saw centrist Third Way policies: devolution to Scotland and Wales, a national minimum wage, and military interventions in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, and Afghanistan. The 2003 Iraq invasion, which he supported with British troops, proved the most divisive decision of his tenure. Blair resigned in 2007, succeeded by Gordon Brown, and later served as Middle East Quartet envoy until 2015. He founded the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in 2016.

Personal life

On March 29, 1980, Blair married barrister Cherie Booth. They have four children: Euan 1984, Nicholas 1985, Kathryn 1988, and Leo 2000, the first baby born to a sitting PM in 150 years. Actor Anthony Booth is Cherie’s father. A lifelong Newcastle United fan, Blair also plays guitar. He speaks French and counts Bill Clinton as a close friend.

Legacy

Three consecutive election victories and the centrist Third Way philosophy mark Blair’s legacy, but the Iraq War overshadowed his premiership. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2003 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007. In a 2003 poll, he was voted the worst Briton. Knighted as a Knight of the Garter in 2010, his institute continues to advise governments worldwide. He is most remembered for the 1997 landslide and the Iraq invasion controversies.
