Who was Billy Graham?

BIOGRAPHY

Billy Graham — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Billy Graham was born William Franklin Graham Jr. on November 7, 1918, on a dairy farm near Charlotte, North Carolina, to parents Morrow Coffey and William Franklin Graham, both dairy farmers. As a young boy, his father made him drink a full bottle of beer to cure his curiosity about alcohol. He attended Sharon High School in Charlotte, graduating in 1936. He studied at Bob Jones University for a year before transferring to Florida Bible Institute. He attended Wheaton College, where he met his future wife, Ruth Bell. He became a minister at age 19.

Career

Graham’s first evangelistic crusade took place in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His 1949 Los Angeles crusade brought him national attention. He became a spiritual advisor to U.S. presidents, most notably Richard Nixon, and gave a prayer at every presidential inauguration from 1948 to 1996. NBC offered him a $1 million contract to appear on television opposite Arthur Godfrey, but he turned it down to continue his revivals. He preached to over 215 million people in more than 185 countries. In 1996, he and his wife Ruth received the Congressional Gold Medal from President Bill Clinton. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, Templeton Prize, and an honorary knighthood from the British government in 2002 followed. He appeared on talk shows including The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Mike Douglas Show.

Personal life

Graham married Ruth Bell Graham on August 13, 1943, and they had five children: Franklin, Anne, Gigi, Ned, and Bunny. A registered Democrat, he counted Republican presidents Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan among his close friends. He maintained a strict rule of never being seen in public alone with any woman other than his wife. A lifelong friend of evangelist Robert H. Schuller, whom he met in 1946, he also developed close friendships with Johnny Cash and Martin Luther King Jr., whom he called Mike. In his later years, Graham suffered from Parkinson’s disease, prostate cancer, and a pelvic fracture. He died at age 99 on February 21, 2018, in Montreat, North Carolina.

Legacy

The Gallup Poll ranked Graham the seventh most admired person of the 20th century. During apartheid, he refused to visit South Africa until integrated seating was allowed, and he openly denounced apartheid during his first crusade there in 1973. He inspired a generation of evangelists, including Franklin Graham, Joel Osteen, and Rick Warren. His autobiography Just As I Am was a bestseller. He oversaw the spiritual rebirth of over 2.5 million people who accepted Jesus at his revivals, making him the most successful Christian evangelist of the modern era.
