Early life

The Buddhist rulers of Outer Mongolia were overthrown by Communists in 1925. Byambyn Rinchen was born in Kyakhta on December 25, 1905, and grew up through these changes. He studied at the Leningrad Orient Institute and later at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest, earning the first doctorate in Mongolian studies from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Career

After the Communist takeover in 1925, Rinchen began writing novels, plays, and poetry. He wrote the screenplay for Tsogt Taij 1945, a film about a 17th-century Mongolian prince that became a landmark of Mongolian cinema. He frequently clashed with Communist ideologues, who accused him of nationalism and of failing to inject sufficient ideology into his works.

Personal life

Rinchen married Ochiryn Ratna. They had one child, Rinchen Barsbold, who became a paleontologist. Rinchen’s independent stance often put him at odds with authorities, but he remained a prominent cultural figure.

Legacy

Byambyn Rinchen shaped modern Mongolia’s cultural affairs under Communism while openly criticizing its orthodoxy. His doctoral work in Mongolian studies at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences laid a foundation for future scholars. The Polish Cultural Merit Order recognized his contributions.
