He studied at St John’s College, Cambridge, leaving without a degree in 1925. Photography began as a hobby while he worked as a clerk for his father.

Career

Beaton became the British Royal Family’s photographer of choice for more than three decades, shooting official portraits. He photographed over 1,000 celebrities from screen, stage, and literature. On stage, he won his first Tony Award in 1955 for Quadrille, followed by My Fair Lady in 1957, Saratoga in 1960, and Coco in 1970. In film, he designed costumes for Anna Karenina 1948, Gigi 1958, and My Fair Lady 1964, winning Oscars for costume design and art direction on the latter two. He also appeared in uncredited cameos in Gigi and fashion documentaries.

Beaton claimed that Greta Garbo was the only woman he ever loved romantically. He had two sisters, Baba and Nancy. He was knighted in 1972 and appointed CBE in 1957, both for services to design and photography. His home in Broadchalke, Wiltshire, later owned by Toyah Willcox, reflected his taste.
