BIOGRAPHY

Cindy Crawford — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Jennifer Sue Walker and John Dan Crawford welcomed their daughter Cindy on February 20, 1966 in DeKalb, Illinois. Her younger brother Jeffrey died of leukemia when she was 10, an event that later inspired her to raise millions for leukemia research. She graduated as co-valedictorian of DeKalb High School in 1984 and received a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University, but she chose modeling instead. At 17, she began modeling and was nicknamed Baby Gia for her resemblance to late supermodel Gia Carangi.

Career

Crawford entered the modeling industry after being a finalist in the Elite Model Look contest in 1983. She became one of the five original supermodels, along with Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Linda Evangelista. In 1990, she appeared with fellow supermodels in George Michael’s music video Freedom 90 directed by David Fincher. She was the first modern supermodel to pose for Playboy and later posed for PETA’s anti-fur campaign in 1994. Crawford transitioned to acting with roles in Fair Game 1995 and 54 1998, and also had a voice role on Frasier. She appeared on over 600 magazine covers worldwide.

Personal life

Crawford married actor Richard Gere on December 12, 1991 in Las Vegas; they divorced in 1995. She married businessman Rande Gerber on May 29, 1998, and they have two children: Presley Gerber born July 2, 1999 and Kaia Gerber born September 3, 2001. Crawford supports LGBTQ+ rights and is a member of PFLAG. She is of English, Danish, Scots-Irish, Scottish, German, and other ancestry, and is an eighth cousin twice removed of author Ernest Hemingway.

Legacy

Cindy Crawford inspired Prince’s song Cindy C. and ranked #3 in Channel 5’s World’s greatest supermodel list. Through her production company Crawdaddy Inc., she built a net worth estimated at $37.7 million in 1998. Her charitable work includes raising millions for leukemia research after her brother’s death. Crawford is best remembered as a founding supermodel who redefined the fashion industry in the 1990s.

Olivia has 6 years of experience writing biographical profiles and still approaches every subject like it's the first one. She covers everyone from debut musicians to Hall of Fame athletes to novelists most people have never heard of. She finds something worth reading in all of them. Her drafts tend to come in already clean, which her editor appreciates. She says good writing is just good thinking written down. Hard to argue with that.
