Early life

At eight years old, Scarlett Johansson stepped onto a New York stage in the off-Broadway play Sophistry alongside Ethan Hawke. Born November 22, 1984 in Manhattan, she is the daughter of architect Karsten Johansson and producer Melanie Sloan. Her Jewish mother encouraged her acting from a young age. She began auditioning for commercials but took rejection hard, so her mother focused on film roles. She made her film debut at nine in North 1994 as John Ritter’s daughter. Growing up with siblings Vanessa, Hunter, Adrian, and others, she attended the Professional Children’s School and the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute.

Career

In 2003, Johansson earned simultaneous Golden Globe nominations for Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, winning the Venice Film Festival Best Actress award for the former. She followed with appearances in In Good Company 2004, Match Point 2005, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona 2008. In 2010, she debuted as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, in Iron Man 2, a role she played through multiple Avengers films, culminating in Avengers: Endgame 2019 and her solo film Black Widow 2021. The sci-fi hit Lucy 2014 featured her as headliner. She earned two Oscar nominations in 2020 for Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit. Her box office total makes her the highest-grossing actress of all time.

Personal life

Johansson married Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds in September 2008; they divorced in July 2011. In 2014, she married French journalist Romain Dauriac; they have a daughter Rose born 2014.
