BIOGRAPHY

Courteney Cox — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On June 15, 1964, Courteney Cox was born in Birmingham, Alabama, into an affluent Southern family. Her parents, Courteney Bass and Richard Lewis Cox, divorced in 1974 when she was ten, an event that affected her. She attended Mountain Brook High School, where she was a cheerleader, tennis player, and swimmer. After graduation, she studied architecture at Mount Vernon College for a year before dropping out to pursue modeling. She appeared on the covers of teen magazines such as Tiger Beat and Little Miss and in commercials for Maybelline and Tampax. She later took acting classes while continuing to model.

Career

Courteney Cox’s first big break came in 1984 when Brian De Palma cast her as the girl pulled from the crowd to dance with Bruce Springsteen in the music video Dancing in the Dark. She moved to Los Angeles in 1985 to star in the series Misfits of Science, which was a commercial flop. In 1987, she landed a recurring role on Family Ties as Lauren Miller, Michael J. Fox’s girlfriend. After a lull, she co-starred in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective 1994 with Jim Carrey. That same year, she was cast as Monica Geller on Friends, a role that turned her into an international superstar and earned her an American Comedy Award nomination. In 1996, she played Gale Weathers in Wes Craven’s Scream, a part she reprised in three sequels. She also appeared in 3000 Miles to Graceland 2001 and The Longest Yard 2005.

Personal life

Courteney Cox married David Arquette on June 12, 1999, after meeting him on the set of Scream. Their daughter Coco was born on June 13, 2004. Cox had eight miscarriages between 2001 and 2010. She was in a six-year relationship with actor Michael Keaton from 1989 to 1995. In 2014, she became engaged to Snow Patrol member John McDaid, introduced by Ed Sheeran. Cox is good friends with Jennifer Aniston, who is the godmother of her daughter Coco, and also with Laura Dern and Sheryl Crow. She lives in Beverly Hills and Malibu, California.

Legacy

Courteney Cox is remembered for her role as Monica Geller on Friends, which aired from 1994 to 2004 and continues to find new audiences. She was the first actress to appear in all four Scream films, a franchise that revitalized the horror genre. In 2023, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6284 Hollywood Boulevard. She also won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a People’s Choice Award. Her dance in Bruce Springsteen’s video Dancing in the Dark inspired Alfonso Ribeiro’s Carlton dance on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

  • A Lot of My Humor Does Come from Anger. It’s Like, You’re Not Gonna Pull One Over on Me – Which Is Pretty Much My Motto Anyways.

  • I Only Have to Do Three Things to Look Halfway Decent, Curl My Eyelashes, Fill in My Eyebrows and Put Some Lipstick On.

  • I Have to Be Physically Attracted to Someone. but I Can’t Just Be with Someone Just Because It’s Great Sex. Because Orgasms Don’t Last Long Enough.

  • I Can Definitely Act Even If I Don’t Appear to Have Any Particular Style. I Know I’m Not a Method Actress, but I Do Believe in Being Physically and Emotionally Prepared for the Role. If I Have a Scene Where I’m Supposed to Be Emotionally Drawn Out, Then I’ll Think of the Saddest Thing in My Life. If I Have to Be Five Pounds Lighter to Be the Right Physical Type, I’ll Run My Little Tail Around the Block to Make the Weight.
