BIOGRAPHY

Drew Pinsky — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Drew Pinsky was the oldest of two children, born in Pasadena, California, on September 4, 1958. His father Dr. Morton Pinsky was a physician, and young Drew often accompanied him on house calls, sparking an early ambition to become a doctor. He attended Polytechnic School in Pasadena, where he played football and served as class president, before enrolling at Amherst College in Massachusetts, graduating with a biology degree in 1980.

He returned to California for medical school at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, earning his M.D. in 1984. His residency at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena led to a chief resident appointment, and he later entered private practice.

Career

In 1983, while in his third year of medical school, Pinsky began hosting the nationally syndicated radio show Loveline on KROQ, offering medical and relationship advice to callers. The show ran until April 28, 2016. In the mid-1990s, Loveline became an MTV television series, which he also hosted.

In 2008, Pinsky partnered with VH1 to create Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, a reality series that followed celebrities through addiction treatment. The show received praise from the addiction community for demystifying the rehab process. He subsequently produced Sober House 2009 and Sex Rehab with Dr. Drew, expanding his focus on addiction medicine. He co-authored the first academic study on celebrity narcissism, published in the Journal of Research in Personality, and wrote the New York Times bestseller The Mirror Effect: How Celebrity Narcissism is Seducing America 2008 and Cracked: Putting Broken Lives Together Again 2009.

Personal life

Pinsky met Susan at a bar in Laguna Beach, California, in the 1980s, and they married on July 21, 1991. Together they have triplets — Douglas Drew Pinsky, Jordan Davidson Pinsky, and Paulina Pinsky — conceived through in vitro fertilization. In his spare time, Pinsky enjoys playing piano he trained as a baritone for 12 years, reading by the pool, and spending time with his family. He maintains a private medical practice in Pasadena, where his patients are typically over 60 years old.

Legacy

Dr. Drew Pinsky’s reality series Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, which aired in 2008, introduced addiction treatment to a television audience. It earned praise from the addiction community for its honest portrayal of recovery. He also co-authored the first academic study on celebrity narcissism, published in the Journal of Research in Personality, which received international media coverage. His New York Times bestseller The Mirror Effect examined the influence of celebrity culture. Beyond media, Pinsky remains a board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist, serving as Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and continuing his private practice. He hosted Loveline for over three decades, providing medical and relationship advice to millions of listeners.
