Who was Farrah Fawcett?

BIOGRAPHY

Farrah Fawcett — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

In 1965, Farrah Fawcett graduated from W. B. Ray High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, voted most beautiful by her classmates. She attended the University of Texas at Austin, originally majoring in microbiology before switching to art. A campus beauty contest caught an agent’s eye, leading her to Hollywood after graduation. Her father James William Fawcett, an oil field contractor, pushed her athleticism. Mother Pauline Alice Evans was a homemaker. She grew up in a Catholic family and attended Catholic schools.

Career

Farrah made her film debut in Love Is a Funny Thing 1969 and appeared in the failed adaptation of Myra Breckinridge 1970. The sci-fi film Logan’s Run 1976 marked her first major success, catching producer Aaron Spelling’s attention. Spelling cast her as Jill Munroe on Charlie’s Angels 1976, a role that turned her into a household name. The show became the most popular series on television, and her hairstyle sparked a national craze. She left after one season to pursue film, but a lawsuit with the producers and a series of box office flops like Saturn 3 1980 stalled her career. She made a dramatic comeback with the TV movie The Burning Bed 1984, earning an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of a battered wife. She later starred in Small Sacrifices 1989 and The Apostle 1997. She also posed for Playboy in 1995 and 1997, the former becoming the magazine’s best-selling issue of the decade.

Personal life

Farrah married actor Lee Majors in 1973; they separated in 1979 and divorced in 1982. She began a long relationship with Ryan O’Neal in 1981, and they had a son, Redmond O’Neal, in 1985. The couple separated in 1997 but reunited in 2001 after O’Neal was diagnosed with leukemia, remaining together until her death. She also dated James Orr, who assaulted her in 1998, leading to his conviction for misdemeanor battery. Farrah was a devout Catholic, attended mass regularly, and received last rites on her deathbed.

Legacy

Millions copied her feathered hairstyle, known as The Farrah. Her red swimsuit poster became the best-selling poster of its time, earning her 10% of the profits. Mattel’s 1977 Superstar Barbie doll drew inspiration from her look, and a collector Barbie followed in 2011. She used her fame to advocate against domestic violence, serving on the National Advisory Council for the National Domestic Violence Hotline. The Farrah Fawcett Foundation continues to fund cancer research. She died on June 25, 2009, the same day as Michael Jackson, and was interred at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. She broke out of typecasting, leaving a legacy as both a sex symbol and a serious actress.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
