Who is Dakota Johnson?

BIOGRAPHY

Dakota Johnson — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

The granddaughter of actress Tippi Hedren, Dakota Mayi Johnson was born on October 4, 1989, in Austin, Texas, to actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith. She attended Santa Catalina School and later New Roads High School.

Johnson appeared in 1999’s Crazy in Alabama alongside her mother and half-sister Stella Banderas, directed by her stepfather Antonio Banderas. Her family waited several years before allowing her to act again, and she returned after high school, signing with the William Morris Agency.

Career

Johnson’s first box office hit came in 2010 with David Fincher’s The Social Network, in which she had a scene with Justin Timberlake. She later landed the role of Anastasia Steele in 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey, reading a monologue from Persona 1966 for her audition. The film became a worldwide hit, and she won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress.

She reprised the role in two sequels and starred in independent films like The Peanut Butter Falcon 2019 and The Lost Daughter 2021. She co-produced Am I OK? 2022, Cha Cha Real Smooth 2022, and Daddio 2023. In 2024, she played the title role in Madame Web.

Personal life

Johnson has been in an off-and-on relationship with Welsh model Matthew Hitt since 2014. She has stated she has never casually dated men and prefers long-term relationships.

She is close to her large family, including half-siblings Jesse Johnson, Stella Banderas, and Grace Johnson. Her ex-stepfather Antonio Banderas remains an important figure; she calls him Papi and reconciled with him after his 2017 heart attack. She also has a close relationship with her grandmother Tippi Hedren, whom she calls Mormor.

Legacy

Johnson is a third-generation Golden Globe participant: her grandmother Tippi Hedren won Most Promising Newcomer in 1964, her mother Melanie Griffith won in 1988, and Johnson herself served as Miss Golden Globe in 2006, the first second-generation Miss Golden Globe. She signed the Time’s Up movement and donated to its legal defense fund. She saved 12 horses from slaughter in 2014.

She continues to take challenging roles, balancing blockbusters with independent films. Her portrayal of Anastasia Steele remains her most recognized role, making her a global star.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
