Who was Jane Wyman?

BIOGRAPHY

Jane Wyman — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Jane Wyman was born Sarah Jane Mayfield on January 5, 1917, in St. Joseph, Missouri. Her father Manning Jefferies Mayfield died when she was five, and her mother Gladys worked as a stenographer. After her parents divorced, the Faulks family unofficially adopted her, and she moved to California. She dropped out of Lafayette High School and worked as a waitress, manicurist, and chorus girl before studying music at the University of Missouri. In 1935, she began her career as a radio singer, adopting the stage name Jane Durrell.

Career

Jane Wyman signed with Warner Bros. in 1936 and appeared in over 80 films. Her breakthrough came with The Lost Weekend 1945, playing Ray Milland’s girlfriend. She earned her first Oscar nomination for The Yearling 1946 and won the Academy Award for Best Actress for Johnny Belinda 1948, playing a deaf-mute rape victim. She received two more Oscar nominations, for The Blue Veil 1951 and Magnificent Obsession 1954. Wyman also starred in Alfred Hitchcock’s Stage Fright 1950 and Frank Capra’s Here Comes the Groom 1951. On television, she hosted and starred in Jane Wyman Presents the Fireside Theatre 1955-1958. Her most famous TV role was Angela Channing on Falcon Crest 1981-1990, winning the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Television Series Drama in 1984. She later guest-starred on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman 1993.

Personal life

Jane Wyman married four times: to Ernest Eugene Wyman 1933-1935, Myron Martin Futterman 1937-1938, Ronald Reagan 1940-1949, and Fred Karger 1952-1954 and 1961-1965. She had three children: Maureen Reagan, who died of melanoma in 2001; Michael Reagan; and Christine Reagan, who lived only nine hours. Despite the divorce from Ronald Reagan, she voted for him in the 1980 and 1984 presidential elections and attended his funeral. Wyman converted to Roman Catholicism and remained close friends with Loretta Young and Eddie Albert.

Legacy

Jane Wyman remains the only wife of a future U.S. President to win an Academy Award. Her performance in Johnny Belinda set a landmark for portraying disability on screen. She defined the role of the conniving matriarch Angela Channing on Falcon Crest, influencing television soap operas. Wyman has two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received the Charles B. Harding Award from the Arthritis Foundation in 1977, which later created the Jane Wyman Award. Posthumous honors recognized her as a top actress of Hollywood’s Golden Age, remembered for her Oscar-winning role and her TV character.
