BIOGRAPHY

Mariah Carey — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1969 in Huntington, Long Island, New York to Patricia Hickey, a former opera singer and vocal coach, and Alfred Roy Carey, an aeronautical engineer. Her mother discovered her talent before age 3 when Mariah sang an aria in Italian from Verdi’s Rigoletto on perfect pitch. She attended Harborfields High School, where she earned the nickname Mirage for her frequent absences. Carey worked odd jobs as a hat-checker and waitress while pursuing a singing career, and was fired from most for her attitude.

Career

Mariah Carey’s 1990 self-titled debut album entered at No. 73 on the Billboard 200 and reached No. 1 on August 4, 1990. It went multi-platinum and produced four consecutive No. 1 singles: Vision of Love, Love Takes Time, Someday, and I Don’t Wanna Cry. She won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. Her 1993 album Music Box went ten-times platinum. On September 30, 1995, her single Fantasy from the Daydream album debuted at No. 1, making her the first female artist to achieve a No. 1 debut. The follow-up One Sweet Day remained at No. 1 for 16 weeks. Her 1999 album Rainbow produced Heartbreaker, her 14th No. 1, which gave her 60 cumulative weeks at No. 1, breaking The Beatles’ record. In 2005, The Emancipation of Mimi became the biggest-selling album of the year, earning her three more Grammys and the No. 1 singles We Belong Together and Don’t Forget About Us. In April 2008, Touch My Body became her 18th No. 1, surpassing Elvis Presley’s 17.

Personal life

Mariah Carey married Tommy Mottola on June 5, 1993, in a wedding modeled after the royal wedding of King Charles III and Princess Diana; they divorced on March 5, 1998. She married Nick Cannon on April 30, 2008, after a 5-day engagement; they separated in 2014 and divorced in 2016. She has fraternal twins with Cannon: daughter Monroe and son Moroccan, born April 30, 2011. Carey has no middle name, as her mother believed Mariah Carey would be her stage name. Her godmother is Patti LaBelle.

Legacy

Mariah Carey holds the record for most No. 1 singles by a solo artist 18 and was named Billboard’s Artist of the Decade. In 2008, Time included her in the 100 Most Influential People, with a tribute by Stevie Wonder. Her 1994 holiday song All I Want for Christmas Is You has earned over $60 million in royalties as of 2020 and reaches No. 1 annually. She founded Camp Mariah, a retreat for inner-city youth in Fishkill, New York. She remains the most successful female singer-songwriter of all time, with over 160 million records sold worldwide.
