Early life

Caroline Webster Schermerhorn Astor gave birth to John Jacob Astor IV on July 13, 1864, in Rhinebeck, New York. He attended St. Paul’s School and later Harvard College, leaving before graduating. At his country estate Ferncliff Farm, he built a miniature steam locomotive complete with a train station and roundhouse, a sign of his passion for mechanical inventions.

Career

During the Spanish-American War in 1898, Astor served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army. As an inventor, he patented a bicycle brake, helped develop the turbine engine, and invented a pneumatic road-improver. He also operated a miniature steam railroad on his estate, Ferncliff Farm, which included a train station and roundhouse. His combination of military service and inventions made him a prominent figure in New York society.

Personal life

On May 1, 1891, Astor married Ava Willing. They had two children, Vincent Astor and Ava Alice Muriel Astor, and divorced in 1909. On September 9, 1911, aged 47, he married 18-year-old Madeleine Talmadge Force. Madeleine gave birth to their son John Jacob Astor VI on August 14, 1912, after Astor’s death. He had a sister, Charlotte Augusta Astor.

Legacy

When the Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, Astor died, the wealthiest passenger lost. His body was recovered and interred at Trinity Church Cemetery and Mausoleum in New York City. He is remembered for his inventions, including a bicycle brake and a pneumatic road-improver. His son Vincent Astor continued the family’s charitable work.
