Who is Michael Jordan?

BIOGRAPHY

Michael Jordan — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

When Michael Jordan was a toddler, his parents moved the family from Brooklyn to Wilmington, North Carolina seeking safer streets. Baseball was his first love – he often played catch with his father. But he soon took up basketball to emulate his older brother Larry, whom he idolized. As a sophomore at Laney High School, Jordan was cut from the varsity team because he was raw and undersized. Over the next summer, he grew four inches and practiced relentlessly. He eventually averaged 25 points per game in his final two years and earned a spot on the McDonald’s All-American Team.

Career

Jordan earned a basketball scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he played under coach Dean Smith. As a freshman in 1982, he hit the game-winning shot to give the Tar Heels the NCAA championship. After winning the Naismith College Player of the Year award in 1984, Jordan left for the NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls chose him with the third overall pick, behind Hakeem Olajuwon and Sam Bowie. As a rookie, he averaged 28.2 points per game, was named Rookie of the Year, and made the All-Star team. Jordan led the Bulls to three consecutive championships from 1991 to 1993. Following his father James’s murder on July 23, 1993, Jordan retired in October 1993. He briefly played minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox’s Double-A affiliate in 1994, then returned to the NBA in March 1995 with the words ‘I’m Back. He led the Bulls to three more consecutive titles from 1996 to 1998, earning Finals MVP each time. Jordan retired again in 1999, then returned for two seasons with the Washington Wizards from 2001 to 2003 before retiring for good.

Personal life

Jordan married Juanita Jordan on September 2, 1989. They divorced in 2006 after a settlement reportedly worth $150 million. The couple had three children: sons Jeffrey Michael born November 18, 1988 and Marcus James born December 24, 1990, and daughter Jasmine Mickael born December 7, 1992. On April 27, 2013, Jordan married Yvette Prieto at Bethesda-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in a ceremony that cost an estimated $10.1 million. The couple has twin daughters, Ysabel and Victoria, born in 2014. His father was murdered on July 23, 1993, a tragedy that contributed to his first retirement. His mother Deloris and siblings Roslyn, Larry, James Jr., and Deloris E. Jordan remain close.

Legacy

Michael Jordan revolutionized the sneaker industry with his Air Jordan line for Nike and inspired a generation of players including Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. His 63-point playoff game against the Boston Celtics in 1986 led Larry Bird to call him God disguised as Michael Jordan. He was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996, inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009, and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016. He is the majority owner of the Charlotte Hornets. His legacy includes six NBA championships, five MVP awards, and the shot that clinched his sixth title on June 14, 1998.
