Early life
Edward Alexander Crowley entered the world on October 12, 1875 in Leamington, Warwickshire, to a wealthy family. His father, a retired engineer and part-owner of a brewery, and his mother were strict Plymouth Brethren, a Christian fundamentalist sect. By age 12, Crowley had memorized inconsistencies in the Bible and grown skeptical of Christianity. He attended boarding schools including Tonbridge School and Eastbourne College, but came to despise their authoritarian methods. In 1894, he joined the Scottish Mountaineering Club, climbing peaks in the Bernese Alps the following year.
