BIOGRAPHY

Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On March 10, 1788, Joseph Karl Benedikt von Eichendorff was born at Schloss Lubowitz in Silesia, then part of Prussia. His parents, Karoline and Adolph von Eichendorff, were part of the old Catholic nobility. The Catholic Secondary School of St. Matthias in Wrocław educated him, followed by law studies at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. By 1808, he had completed basic studies at Heidelberg University. A journey to Paris and Berlin brought him into contact with writers Clemens Brentano, Heinrich von Kleist, and Achim von Arnim. He finished his studies at the University of Vienna in 1812.

Career

Eichendorff entered the Prussian civil service after his education, serving in various departments until 1844. During this time, he wrote his most famous works. His 1826 novella Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts became a key work of German Romanticism, blending prose and poetry. He also wrote the classic poems Mondnacht and Das zerbrochene Ringlein. These works explore nature, longing, and the contrast between everyday life and poetry.

Personal life

Eichendorff married Luise von Larisch, and they raised two sons: Hermann and Rudolf. His siblings included brother Wilhelm and sister Luise. The Catholic nobility background shaped his conservative views and literary themes. He died in Neisse, Silesia, on November 26, 1857.

Legacy

Eichendorff holds a place as a key figure in German Romanticism. His novella Aus dem Leben eines Taugenichts remains a staple of German literature, widely anthologized. He received the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art. His poetry continues to be set to music and adapted, extending his influence on German culture.
