Early life
On March 10, 1788, Joseph Karl Benedikt von Eichendorff was born at Schloss Lubowitz in Silesia, then part of Prussia. His parents, Karoline and Adolph von Eichendorff, were part of the old Catholic nobility. The Catholic Secondary School of St. Matthias in Wrocław educated him, followed by law studies at Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. By 1808, he had completed basic studies at Heidelberg University. A journey to Paris and Berlin brought him into contact with writers Clemens Brentano, Heinrich von Kleist, and Achim von Arnim. He finished his studies at the University of Vienna in 1812.
