BIOGRAPHY

Lady Gaga — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age four, Stefani Germanotta learned to play the piano by ear and wrote her first piano ballad by 13. Born in Manhattan on March 20, 1986, to Cynthia and Joe Germanotta, she attended the Convent of the Sacred Heart, where she was bullied for her appearance and eccentric habits. By 14, she was performing at open mic nights in clubs and bars. At 17, she gained early admission to New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, but withdrew at 19 to pursue music full-time, moving out of her parents’ home.

Career

In 2008, Lady Gaga released her debut album The Fame, which produced hits like Just Dance and Poker Face. The follow-up EP The Fame Monster 2009 delivered Bad Romance, Telephone, and Alejandro. Her 2011 album Born This Way sold 1.108 million copies in its first week in the US, debuting atop the Billboard 200. She made her acting debut in Machete Kills 2013 and starred in A Star Is Born 2018, earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress and winning an Oscar for Best Original Song for Shallow. In 2021, she starred in House of Gucci.

Personal life

Lady Gaga’s engagement to actor Taylor Kinney lasted from February 2015 to July 2016. She has been open about her diagnosis of fibromyalgia in 2017 and quit drinking and smoking marijuana after a hip injury in 2013. She launched the Born This Way Foundation with her mother Cynthia in 2011 to promote mental health and kindness. Gaga has a younger sister, Natali, and her father co-owns the restaurant Joanne Trattoria in New York, named after her aunt who died of lupus.

Legacy

Lady Gaga has sold over 124 million records worldwide, placing her among the best-selling musicians of all time. She has won 13 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a BAFTA, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards. Senior Editorial Director & Managing Editor

Emma has 8 years of editorial experience and a very clear idea of what a good biography looks like. At Famousy, she runs the editorial operation and decides what meets the bar and what doesn't. She's the kind of editor who remembers the profiles she pushed back on more clearly than the ones she approved. That's not a complaint. That's exactly why the site reads the way it does.
