BIOGRAPHY

Liv Tyler — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Liv Tyler, born Liv Rundgren on July 1, 1977 in New York City, grew up as the daughter of model Bebe Buell and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler. Until age 11, she believed musician Todd Rundgren was her father. Her mother named her after actress Liv Ullmann, who appeared on a TV Guide cover shortly before Tyler’s birth.

She attended multiple schools including Crossroads School for Arts & Sciences, York Preparatory School, Waynflete School, and Breakwater School. She began modeling at 14 after a Pantene commercial led to her discovery. She has had ADHD since childhood and quit smoking in 2002 after starting at age 14.

Career

Tyler made her film debut in 1994’s Silent Fall directed by Bruce Beresford. She was then cast by James Mangold in his first feature Heavy, a critical and commercial success that gained cult status. In 1995, she appeared in Empire Records, another indie cult hit. The lead role in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Stealing Beauty catapulted her to stardom at age 18.

She followed with Tom Hanks’ That Thing You Do! and Michael Bay’s blockbuster Armageddon 1998, which opened on her 21st birthday. Director Robert Altman cast her in Cookie’s Fortune and Dr T and the Women, praising her professionalism. In 2001, she began her role as Arwen in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, continuing through the trilogy. She later played Betty Ross in Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk 2008 and took on diverse roles in Jersey Girl, Robot & Frank, and the TV series The Leftovers.

Personal life

Tyler married Royston Langdon on March 25, 2003, and they divorced in 2009. She gave birth to her first son, Milo William Langdon, on December 14, 2004. Since spring 2014, she has been in a relationship with Dave Gardner, and they got engaged in early 2015. They have two children: Sailor Gene Gardner born February 11, 2015 and Lula Rose Gardner born July 8, 2016. She resides in London, England.

She is best friends with Kate Hudson and Jennifer Connelly, and counts Orlando Bloom, Gwyneth Paltrow, and David Beckham among her close friends. David Beckham is godfather to her son Sailor. She has never taken acting lessons and considers Todd Rundgren her spiritual father. Her two fathers, Steven Tyler and Todd Rundgren, met for the first time at her wedding.

Legacy

Liv Tyler’s portrayal of Arwen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy became a popular fantasy character, securing her a lasting place in cinematic history. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. In 1997, People magazine named her one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World, and The Age.com ranked her #2 in their Top 100 Natural Beauties of All Time.

Beyond acting, Tyler has forged a longtime relationship with Givenchy as a fragrance and cosmetics spokesperson and has designed capsule collections for Belstaff and Triumph. She is remembered for her emotional truth on screen and her refusal to be pigeonholed by genre, consistently choosing roles that speak to her instinctually.
