BIOGRAPHY

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Elizabeth Bowes Lyon was born on August 4, 1900 at her father’s summer home, St. Paul’s Waldenbury in Hertfordshire, the fourth daughter and ninth of ten children of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. She was of Scottish heritage and fluent in French. Her older brother Fergus died at the Battle of Loos in World War I, and another brother Michael was captured and spent the rest of the war as a POW. When Prince Albert, the future King George VI, proposed in 1921, she initially refused, afraid of losing her freedom. Queen Mary later intervened by sending a rival overseas, clearing Albert’s path.

Career

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother became Queen Consort when her husband acceded to the throne in December 1936. During World War II, she visibly boosted British morale during the London Blitz, visiting bombed areas and appearing in public, which prompted Adolf Hitler to call her Europe’s most dangerous woman. She performed royal duties and attended public engagements until November 2001 at the age of 101. She appeared as herself in films such as The Memphis Belle 1944 and was featured in documentaries like American Experience 1988.

Personal life

She married Prince Albert, Duke of York later King George VI on April 26, 1923. They had two daughters: Elizabeth Alexandra Mary later Queen Elizabeth II, born April 21, 1926 and Princess Margaret Rose born August 21, 1930. After her husband’s death in 1952, she moved to the Royal Lodge at Windsor. She was a fan of television comedies including The Golden Girls, Keeping Up Appearances, Dad’s Army, and Steptoe and Son. Her favorite actor was John Wayne. In 1995, she scheduled a hip replacement surgery for the same week as Princess Diana’s Martin Bashir interview, reportedly to eclipse any negative coverage.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother lived to 101, the first British royal to reach that age. Her funeral had been planned since 1969. She was portrayed by Helena Bonham Carter in The King’s Speech 2010 and by Victoria Hamilton and Marion Bailey in The Crown. She received numerous honors, including the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, Companion of the Order of Canada, and the Royal Victorian Chain. On her wedding day, she laid her bouquet at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a tradition copied by royal brides ever since. She is most remembered for her resilience during WWII and her enduring popularity as the Queen Mum.
