Who was Raj Kapoor?

BIOGRAPHY

Raj Kapoor — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born on December 14, 1924 in Peshawar, North-West Frontier Province, British India to Ramsarni Kapoor and Prithviraj Kapoor. His father was a stage and film actor, exposing Raj to the performing arts from childhood. He attended Colonel Brown Cambridge School and St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, but his schooling ended early as he apprenticed in Bollywood studios in the 1940s. The influence of his family’s profession and the studio environment set him on a film career.

Career

At age 24, Raj Kapoor produced, directed, and starred in his first film Aag 1948 under his newly formed RK Films. His next production Barsaat 1949 was a smash hit and established him as a major figure. In 1951, he released Awaara, a megahit that also found huge popularity in Russia with its dubbed songs. The film’s theme song Awaara Hoon became a hit across the East. Kapoor continued to address social themes in films like Shree 420 1955, which dealt with poverty and national pride, while maintaining a romantic narrative. He drew inspiration from Charlie Chaplin, modeling his own tramp character in Awaara, Shree 420, and Mera Naam Joker 1970 after Chaplin. Kapoor’s understanding of music and direction set a standard for Bollywood. He worked with top talents like writer Kwaja Ahmad Abbas, music duo Shankar-Jaikishen, and playback singers Mukesh, Mohamed Rafi, and Lata Mangeshkar. His personal favorite among his films was Mera Naam Joker, though it had varying success. He acted in over 70 films and directed 10.

Personal life

Raj Kapoor married Krishna Kapoor in 1947, and they had five children: sons Randhir, Rishi, and Rajiv Kapoor, and daughters Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain. Off-screen, he had a loving relationship with his frequent co-star Nargis while remaining married to Krishna. His siblings included actors Shammi Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor. Kapoor’s extended family forms a Bollywood dynasty: his grandsons include Ranbir Kapoor and Armaan Jain, and his granddaughters include Karisma and Kareena Kapoor. His daughter Ritu’s son Nikhil Nanda married Shweta Bachchan, daughter of Amitabh Bachchan, linking two major film families.

Legacy

In 2001, Raj Kapoor was named Best Director of the Millennium at the Stardust Awards, and in 2002, Showman of the Millennium at the Star Screen Awards. The government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan in 1971 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1987. He and his father Prithviraj Kapoor remain the first father-son duo to receive the Padma Bhushan. In 2013, UK’s Eastern Eye ranked him the 6th greatest Bollywood star of all time. His RK Studios, initially undervalued, sold 30 years after his death for US$ 200 million. Kapoor’s films continue to be studied for their blend of entertainment and social commentary, securing his identity as the Showman of Bollywood.

A wall of memorable lines from Raj Kapoor — lyrics, interviews, and off-the-cuff remarks captured over a lifetime.

  • Our People Are Gracious and Kind. They Go to All the Trouble to Go to a Cinema, Stand in Long Queues and Procure a Ticket. They Go Through the Hustle and Bustle, Through the Blazing Sun and the Thrashing Rain, to See Your Film, And; as I Have Always Said – If You Do Not Cheat the Audience, They Are Very Kind to You. Don’t Make a Fool of Them. Do Not Take Them for Granted. They May Not Be as Intelligent or as Critical as Other Audiences, but Why They Have Come There, They Know: They Want to Be Entertained.

  • There Is Nothing in This World Except Love. the More You Spread It or Give It, the More It Expands. the More You Accept Love, the Stronger It Becomes. the More You Bring Out Love, the Better and Greater You Become. There Are Many Forms of Love. If You Make It Narrow, Then It Becomes Selfish. Selfish Love Can Benefit a Person but He Loses His Significance.
