Who is Richard Branson?

BIOGRAPHY

Richard Branson — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On 18 July 1950, Richard Branson arrived in Blackheath, London, to parents Eve and Edward James Branson. He attended Scaitcliffe Preparatory School in Sussex and later Stowe School before dropping out at age 15. His first entrepreneurial venture was a used record store called Virgin Records, named because it was his first business.

Career

Branson’s breakthrough came when he signed school friend Mike Oldfield to his Virgin Records label. Oldfield’s Tubular Bells became a multi-million seller after being used as the theme for the 1973 film The Exorcist. In 1984, after a flight cancellation, he chartered a plane and founded Virgin Atlantic Airways, writing a hand-lettered sign reading Virgin Atlantic Airways – Flight 1. He launched Virgin Galactic with spacecraft named VSS Enterprise and VSS Voyager, and made cameo appearances in a 1998 episode of Friends and The Simpsons.

Personal life

Branson married Kristen Tomassi in 1972; their honeymoon boat sank off Mexico, and the couple swam to shore. They divorced in 1979. He then married Joan Templeman in 1989, with whom he has children Holly, born in 1982, and Sam, born in 1985. His daughter Clare Sarah died four days after birth in 1979. He has a sister Vanessa Branson, and is uncle-in-law to Academy Award winner Kate Winslet.

Legacy

Branson built the Virgin Group into more than 200 companies spanning airlines, trains, music, and space travel. He co-founded The Elders human rights group with Nelson Mandela and Peter Gabriel. Awarded Knight Bachelor in 2000 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018, he is remembered for founding Virgin Records, pioneering commercial space flight with Virgin Galactic, and his philanthropic efforts.
