Shamsher Raj Kapoor, later called Shammi Kapoor, was born October 21, 1930 in Bombay to theater and film actor Prithviraj Kapoor and Ramsarni Kapoor. He was the middle brother between Raj and Shashi Kapoor. He attended Don Bosco High School and began his acting career in 1948 by joining his father’s theatrical company Prithvi Theatres.
Shammi Kapoor made his big screen debut in 1953, but his early films were low-budget swashbucklers and romances that failed. Everything changed with Tumsa Nahin Dekha 1957, for which he cut his hair and shaved his mustache, creating a new look. His first color picture Junglee 1961 made him a star with his boisterous Yahoo! shout and hip-shaking dance moves. He won the Filmfare Best Actor award for Brahmachari 1968.
