Who was Sharon Tate?

BIOGRAPHY

Sharon Tate — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Sharon Marie Tate was born on January 24, 1943, in Dallas, Texas, to Paul James Tate and Doris Gwendolyn Willett. Her father’s military career caused the family to move frequently, living in Pasadena, Texas, and Richland, Washington, before relocating to Italy in 1959. While at Vicenza American High School, Tate was voted Homecoming Queen and Senior Prom Queen. She won five beauty pageants in 1959, including Miss Frontier Days and Miss Tri-Cities, and was a cheerleader, baton twirler, and star basketball player.

Career

Tate’s acting career began with uncredited roles in Italian films before moving to Hollywood. Her first notable break came as Janet Trego on The Beverly Hillbillies from 1963 to 1965. In 1967, she met Roman Polanski on the set of The Fearless Vampire Killers, playing Sarah Shagal. That same year, she starred as Jennifer North in Valley of the Dolls, her most widely seen role. She worked with Dean Martin in The Wrecking Crew 1968 and completed 12+1 in 1969 just weeks before her death, taking the role specifically to work with Orson Welles.

Personal life

Tate married Roman Polanski on January 20, 1968, in London, with Warren Beatty, Michael Caine, and Leslie Caron among the attendants. She was eight and a half months pregnant with her son Paul Richard Polanski at the time of her death. Close friendships included Patty Duke and Barbara Parkins, who served as her maid of honor. Friends described Tate as kind; Mia Farrow called her as sweet and pure a human being as I have ever known, and Patty Duke remembered her as a gentle, gentle creature.

Legacy

Sharon Tate’s murder ended a promising film career and left a permanent mark on Hollywood. Her friend Christopher Jones abandoned acting after a nervous breakdown following her death. The house at 10050 Cielo Drive was demolished in 1994. In 2003, E! ranked her murder as the ninth most shocking moment in entertainment. Margot Robbie portrayed her in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 2019, introducing her story to new generations. Tate is remembered for her beauty, talent, and tragically short life.

  • My Whole Life Has Been Decided by Fate. I’ve Never Planned Anything That’s Happened to Me.

  • Sexiness Is All in the Eye of the Beholder. I Think It Should Be. Absolutely. My Sex Appeal, Whatever It Might Be, Isn’t Obvious . . . at Least to Me.

  • My Definition of Love Is Being Full. Complete. It Makes Everything Lighter. Beauty Is Something You See. Love Is Something You Feel.

  • Everything That’s Realistic Has Some Sort of Ugliness in It. Even a Flower Is Ugly When It Wilts, a Bird When It Seeks Its Prey, the Ocean When It Becomes Violent.

  • I’m Very Unpredictable. Very, Very Impulsive. Extremely. Absolutely! Sometimes I Don’t Know What I Want to Do from One Day to the Next. I Can’t Enjoy Anything Premeditated; I Just Do It as I Feel It. but Whatever I Do Is Motivated by Honesty.

  • I’m One of Those Mad, Irrational Characters Who Simply Loves Men. I Love Them Because They’re Men. Women, …I Don’t Like to Compete Against Them or Play Games. It’s a Waste of Time.

  • I Honestly Don’t Understand the Big Fuss Made Over Nudity and Sex in Films. It’s Silly. on TV, the Children Can Watch People Murdering Each Other, Which Is a Very Unnatural Thing, but They Can’t Watch Two People in the Very Natural Process of Making Love. Now, Really, That Doesn’t Make Any Sense, Does It?

  • I’d Like to Be an American Catherine Deneuve. She Plays Beautiful, Sensitive, Deep Parts with a Little Bit of Intelligence Behind Them.

  • Sometimes, I Think It Would Be Better to Be a Sex Symbol, Because at Least I Would Know Where I Was…But I’d Lose My Mind!
