BIOGRAPHY

Whitney Houston — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

She began singing backing vocals professionally at age 15 with her mother Cissy Houston on Chaka Khan’s 1978 hit I’m Every Woman. Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey, into a musical family. She started singing in the choir at New Hope Baptist Church as a young child. Her mother was a gospel-blues singer who once performed for Elvis Presley; her cousin Dionne Warwick was already a star. After rioting in Newark when she was four, the family moved to East Orange, New Jersey. By 1981, she was modeling and appeared on the cover of Seventeen magazine.

Career

Houston’s self-titled debut album, released in 1985, sold 25 million copies worldwide and became the biggest-selling debut album by a female artist. It scored four number one singles, including Saving All My Love For You and How Will I Know. Her follow-up Whitney, released in 1987, became the first album by a female artist to debut at number one on the Billboard charts. The 1992 film The Bodyguard and its soundtrack, featuring her cover of I Will Always Love You, sold 44 million copies and remains the best-selling soundtrack of all time. She won Grammy Awards for both albums and continued to tour and record despite personal struggles.

Personal life

Houston married singer Bobby Brown in 1992, and their daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown was born in March 1993. The marriage was tumultuous, and Houston began using drugs regularly by 1996. She suffered three miscarriages during their relationship, in 1991, 1994, and 1996. Her later relationship was with Ray J, from 2006 to 2012. Houston entered rehab twice and declared herself drug-free in 2010, but returned to rehab in May 2011. Her daughter Bobbi Kristina died in 2015 at age 22 after being found unconscious in a bathtub.

Legacy

Whitney Houston sold over 200 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She holds the record for most American Music Awards won by a single artist, with 26. Her seven consecutive Billboard Hot 100 number ones from 1985 to 1988 remain unmatched. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2013. A school, the Whitney E. Houston School of Creative and Performing Arts, was named after her in East Orange, New Jersey. I Will Always Love You showcases her vocal range and emotional delivery.
