In 1941, Orson Welles made his feature debut with Citizen Kane, a film that regularly appears at the top of greatest-films lists. He gained notoriety in 1938 for his radio adaptation of The War of the Worlds. He received the Academy Honorary Award in 1971 and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1975. He died of a heart attack in 1985.
