BIOGRAPHY

Carla Bruni — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On December 23, 1967, Carla Gilberta Bruni Tedeschi was born in Turin, Italy, to Marisa Borini, a concert pianist, and Maurizio Remmert, a businessman. Her family moved to France when she was seven, settling in Paris. She attended the Lycée Janson-de-Sailly and later studied at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne.

Her mother, a concert pianist, and her father, a classical composer, exposed her to the arts from an early age. After briefly studying art and architecture, she left her studies to pursue modeling, becoming one of the world’s top fashion models.

Career

Bruni first worked as a top fashion model. In 2002, she released her self-written debut album Quelqu’un m’a dit, which sold over one million copies and earned her the Victoires de la Musique for Female Artist of the Year. Her second album, No Promises 2007, reached number one in France and Switzerland.

She also acted in films including The Lake House 2006, 500 Days of Summer 2009, and Midnight in Paris 2011. She contributed lyrics for French singer Julien Clerc and composed music for her own albums.

Personal life

Bruni has been married to French President Nicolas Sarkozy since February 2, 2008, becoming First Lady of France. They have a daughter, Giulia Sarkozy, born in 2011. She also has a son, Aurélien Enthoven born 2001, from a previous relationship with philosophy professor Raphaël Enthoven.

In the 1990s, she had relationships with musicians Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. Her sister Valeria Bruni Tedeschi is an actress, and her brother Virginio died of HIV/AIDS complications in 2006. She holds dual Italian and French citizenship.

Legacy

Her debut album Quelqu’un m’a dit 2002 sold over one million copies and earned her the Victoires de la Musique award. Justin Lévy’s 2004 novel Rien de grave based its protagonist on Bruni.

As First Lady of France 2008-2012, she promoted cultural diplomacy. She received honors including the Officer of Arts and Letters in France, the Grand Cross of the National Order of Benin, and the Collar of the Order of Charles III from Spain. She is a style icon and a symbol of the modern European woman.
