Who was Cary Grant?

BIOGRAPHY

Cary Grant — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age nine, Cary Grant came home to find his mother had been institutionalized without explanation, a secret he uncovered only in his late twenties. He was born Archibald Alec Leach on January 18, 1904 in Horfield, Bristol, England, to Elsie Kingdom and Elias James Leach. He left school at 14, forging his father’s signature to join Bob Pender’s troupe of knockabout comedians, learning pantomime and acrobatics.

Career

Cary Grant’s Hollywood breakthrough came in 1933 with Mae West’s She Done Him Wrong, where West cast him for his virility and gentlemanly bearing. He freelanced after his Paramount contract ended, a rare move that allowed him to choose roles such as Bringing Up Baby 1938, The Philadelphia Story 1940, and His Girl Friday 1940. In the 1950s he created a polished comedy style, improvising with Grace Kelly in Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief 1955. His biggest box-office success came with Hitchcock’s North by Northwest 1959. Grant gave his entire fee for The Philadelphia Story to the British war effort.

Personal life

Grant married five times: Virginia Cherrill 1934–1935, Barbara Hutton 1942–1945, Betsy Drake 1949–1962, Dyan Cannon 1965–1968, and Barbara Harris 1981 until his death. He had one child, Jennifer Grant, born in 1966 when he was 62. He shared a house with actor Randolph Scott from 1932 to 1944, a subject of public fascination. He was romantically involved with Sophia Loren during The Pride and the Passion 1957, proposing to her after separating from Betsy Drake; she chose Carlo Ponti. He remained close to Barbara Hutton’s son Lance Reventlow after their divorce and was devastated by his 1972 plane crash.

Legacy

In 1999, the American Film Institute named Grant the second-greatest male star of Golden Age Hollywood, behind only Humphrey Bogart. Ian Fleming partially modeled James Bond after him. Christopher Reeve based his Clark Kent on his early career performances. He turned down the role of Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady 1964 and Bond in Dr. No 1962. He received the Academy Honorary Award in 1970 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 1978. His estate was valued at $60 million at his death. He is most remembered for his comic timing and debonair screen presence in films like North by Northwest and Charade.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
