A nearly fatal dog bite at age two left Charlie Puth with a permanent scar on his right eyebrow. He was born on December 2, 1991, in Rumson, New Jersey, to Debra and Charles Otto Puth Sr. His father is of Italian, German, and Hungarian descent and Catholic; his mother is Jewish. Puth has two younger twin siblings, Stephen and Mikaela.

He attended Manhattan School of Music and later Berklee College of Music, studying music production and songwriting. Puth grew up with music from his family and started posting videos to YouTube as a teenager.

Puth first gained attention through viral YouTube videos, leading to an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and a contract with eleven-eleven. He contributed to songs for artists like Cody Simpson and Livingston Taylor before focusing on his solo career. In 2015, his debut single Marvin Gaye featuring Meghan Trainor became a success.

That same year, Puth co-wrote, co-produced, and performed See You Again with Wiz Khalifa for the Furious 7 soundtrack, a tribute to Paul Walker. The song spent 12 non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. His subsequent single One Call Away reached number 12 in 2016. His debut album Nine Track Mind was released in January 2016, followed by the hit We Don’t Talk Anymore.

In 2017, Puth released Attention, which peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, and How Long. Both were included on his second studio album Voicenotes 2018, which received positive reviews and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200.

Puth married Brooke Sansone in 2024. He has two younger siblings, twins Stephen and Mikaela. In 2019, he dated singer Charlotte Lawrence. His parents are Debra and Charles Otto Puth Sr., and his aunt works for a local bank in Monmouth County, New Jersey.
