BIOGRAPHY

Christopher Hitchens — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Christopher Eric Hitchens was born on April 13, 1949, in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. His father, a career officer in the British Royal Navy, later became a bookkeeper. His family sent him to private schools in Tavistock, Devon, and the Cambridge School in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire.

He studied at Balliol College, Oxford, graduating in 1970. There he developed the intellectual rigor and polemical style that would define his career. His mother, who concealed her Jewish identity from her husband and family, committed suicide in Athens in 1973, an event that deeply affected him.

Career

Hitchens began his journalism career in the 1970s, reporting from Northern Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, Portugal, Spain, and Argentina for The Nation and The New Statesman. In 1981, he moved to the United States, becoming a naturalized citizen in 2007. He wrote for Vanity Fair, The Atlantic, Slate, and Free Inquiry, and his columns on atheism gained wide readership.

In 2003, Hitchens publicly supported the American invasion of Iraq, a stance that led him to leave The Nation after 20 years. He underwent a waterboarding experiment for Vanity Fair at the suggestion of editor Graydon Carter, lasting less than 20 seconds before signaling to stop. His television appearances included frequent spots on Real Time with Bill Maher and The Daily Show.

Personal life

He married Eleni Meleagrou, a Greek Cypriot, in 1981; they had two children, Alexander and Sophia. The marriage ended in divorce in 1989. In 1991, he married Carol Blue, with whom he had a daughter, Antonia. He remained married to Carol until his death.

He learned in 1987 that his mother was Jewish, a revelation that came after her suicide in 1973. His younger brother, Peter Hitchens, is also a journalist, though the two held sharply different political and religious views. He was good friends with novelist Ian McEwan and considered Thomas Jefferson a personal hero.

Legacy

Christopher Hitchens was one of the Four Horsemen of the Non-Apocalypse, alongside Sam Harris, Daniel Dennett, and Richard Dawkins. His atheism and anti-theism influenced a generation of secular thinkers. He received the Richard Dawkins Award, the PEN/Diamonstein-Spielvogel Award for the Art of the Essay, and the LennonOno Grant for Peace.

His columns and books are still widely read, and his debates on religion and politics are regularly referenced in public discourse. He died at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston on December 15, 2011, but his writings and the robot Hitchbot, named after him, continue his legacy.
