Who was Edgar Allan Poe?

BIOGRAPHY

Edgar Allan Poe — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

After his mother Eliza died of tuberculosis in 1811 and his father abandoned the family, John Allan adopted Poe. He attended boarding school in London from 1815 to 1820, then returned to Richmond. He enrolled at the University of Virginia in 1826 but dropped out after one year due to gambling debts. John Allan broke off Poe’s engagement to Sarah Royster as a result.

Career

Poe published his first book, Tamerlane and Other Poems, in 1827 while enlisted in the army. In 1829 he entered West Point but was dismissed after six months. His best-known poem, The Raven, appeared in 1845, bringing fame but no profit. He wrote short stories including Ligeia in 1838, The Fall of the House of Usher in 1839, and The Masque of the Red Death. In 1841 he published The Murders in the Rue Morgue, considered the first detective story, featuring C. Auguste Dupin.

Personal life

Poe married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia Clemm in 1835. She died of tuberculosis in 1847, devastating him. He briefly reunited with former fiancée Sarah Royster in 1849, shortly before his own death. Poe struggled with alcoholism, and foster father John Allan disinherited him.

Legacy

The Baltimore Ravens NFL team took its name from Poe’s poem The Raven. Composers Claude Debussy and Sergei Rachmaninoff found inspiration in his work. The Mystery Writers of America present the Edgar Awards, named after Poe, for mystery fiction. Poe’s horror stories earned him the title master of the macabre, and The Murders in the Rue Morgue established the detective fiction genre.
