T.S. Eliot.

Born on September 26, 1888 in St. Louis, Missouri, T.S. Eliot grew up in a respectable middle-class family with deep New England roots. He spent summers in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and attended Milton Academy before matriculating at Harvard University in 1906. At Harvard, he studied philosophy under George Santayana, William James, and Bertrand Russell, completing his undergraduate degree in three years. He later studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and at Merton College, Oxford, after his plans to study in Germany were derailed by World War I. Eliot’s exposure to European culture and his rejection of academia set the stage for his literary career in London.

T.S. Eliot’s poetic career began with The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, published in 1915, which introduced his distinctive modernist voice. His 1922 masterpiece The Waste Land, edited by Ezra Pound, became a watershed moment for literary modernism. Eliot followed with The Hollow Men in 1925 and later turned to drama, writing Murder in the Cathedral in 1935, The Family Reunion in 1939, and The Cocktail Party in 1949, which won a Tony Award for Best Play in 1950. His light verse collection Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats from 1939 was posthumously adapted into the musical Cats, earning him two Tony Awards in 1983. Eliot worked as an editor at Faber and Faber and published essays on literature and culture.

Eliot’s first marriage to Vivienne Haigh-Wood in 1915 was troubled; she suffered from mental instability and was institutionalized in 1938, dying in 1947. Eliot himself had a breakdown in 1921 and was treated in Switzerland. In 1957, he married his former secretary, Valerie Fletcher, who was 38 years younger. Eliot became a British subject in 1927 and converted to Anglo-Catholicism, embracing conservative values. He had six siblings and was known for his pen names, including Old Possum.

T.S. Eliot’s influence on English-language poetry is profound, with The Waste Land and Prufrock remaining essential works. He received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1948 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. His posthumous honors include a 22-cent US stamp issued in 1986 and multiple Tony Awards for Cats. Eliot is buried at Westminster Abbey. While his conservative views have been critiqued, his technical innovations and philosophical depth secure his place as a defining poet of the 20th century.
