Who is Ed Sheeran?

BIOGRAPHY

Ed Sheeran — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Ed Sheeran was born Edward Christopher Sheeran on February 17, 1991, in Halifax, West Yorkshire, England. His father John Sheeran, an art curator, nurtured his early passion for music. Sheeran attended Thomas Mills High School and later studied at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Guildford. He began writing and recording songs in 2005 at age 14, inspired by artists like Elton John. While trying to start his career, he spent six weeks crashing on Jamie Foxx’s couch in Los Angeles. Foxx invited him to perform at an all-black club with his ukulele, where he received a standing ovation.

Career

Ed Sheeran’s debut album + Plus in 2011 gave him his breakthrough, featuring hits like The A Team. His 2014 album x Multiply won him Brit Awards and Grammy recognition, including Best Pop Solo Performance for Thinking Out Loud. In March 2017, Sheeran’s third album ÷ Divide set a UK chart record: nine of its songs held the top 10 positions, and all 16 tracks made the top 20. The album sold 672,000 copies in its first week, the fastest for a male artist in UK history. Sheeran also contributed to film soundtracks, singing I See Fire for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and acted in Game of Thrones as a Lannister soldier, Bridget Jones’s Baby, and The Simpsons as a voice actor. He won Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Album.

Personal life

Ed Sheeran married Cherry Seaborn, a childhood friend, in a private ceremony. Their first daughter, Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran, was born in August 2020. Sheeran named his guitars Felix, Cyril, Nigel, and Loyd. He loves Heinz Tomato Ketchup so much that he has a tattoo, a lifetime supply, and a branded version called Edchup from 2019. A huge fan of Elton John, he attended John’s wedding to David Furnish in 2014. Sheeran’s tenor vocal range spans 3.8 octaves.

Legacy

Ed Sheeran’s impact on pop music is clear from his record-breaking sales and streaming numbers. As of 2021, he was the second most streamed artist on Spotify with 77 million monthly listeners, and the fourth most-subscribed music artist on YouTube with 46 million followers. His feat with ÷ Divide showed his dominance in the digital era. TIME magazine named him one of the 100 Most Influential People in 2017, with a tribute by Taylor Swift. Sheeran was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire MBE in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to music and charity. His song Afire Love samples a score from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, reflecting his eclectic influences. Sheeran wrote personal songs that connected with listeners worldwide.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
