Who is Enrique Iglesias?

BIOGRAPHY

Enrique Iglesias — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age 15, Enrique Iglesias secretly began writing music in his Miami bedroom, hiding his ambitions from his famous father, Julio Iglesias. His parents’ marriage was annulled in 1979 when he was four, and he moved from Madrid to the United States at eight, which laid the foundation for his bilingual career. He briefly studied business administration at the University of Miami before dropping out after a year to pursue songwriting full time.

Career

On September 25, 1995, an 18-year-old Enrique Iglesias released his debut Spanish-language album, followed by a second on January 29, 1997. His 2008 album Insomniac featured the UEFA Europa League official song Can You Hear Me. Euphoria 2010 was his first bilingual album, and Sex and Love 2014 continued that trend. He has sold over 137 million records, with more number-one singles on Billboard’s Latin charts than any other male artist. He also acted in Once Upon a Time in Mexico 2003 and guest-starred on Two and a Half Men and How I Met Your Mother.

Personal life

Enrique Iglesias has been in a relationship with former tennis star Anna Kournikova since late 2001. The couple have three children: twins Lucy and Nicholas, born December 16, 2017, and daughter Mary, born January 30, 2020. He is one of 10 siblings, including half-siblings from both parents, such as Julio Iglesias Jr. and Tamara Falcó Preysler.

Legacy

With over 137 million records sold, Enrique Iglesias is one of the best-selling Latin artists in history. He holds the record for most number-one singles on Billboard’s Latin charts, and his crossover success influenced later Latin pop stars. He has won multiple Grammy and Latin Grammy awards, and in 2020 received Brazil’s Order of Cultural Merit. He is remembered as the King of Latin Pop, a title earned through decades of bilingual hits and global tours.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
