Who was Enzo Ferrari?

BIOGRAPHY

Enzo Ferrari — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At the age of 10, after watching the 1908 Circuit di Bologna, Enzo Ferrari decided to become a race car driver. Born on February 18, 1898, in Modena, Italy, his father Alfredo had a metal business. His formal education was minimal; during WWI, he was assigned to shoeing mules in the Alpine Artillery. Both his father and brother died in 1916 from the Italian flu outbreak, collapsing the family business. Ferrari himself survived the 1918 flu epidemic after a severe illness.

Career

Ferrari’s greatest victory as a driver was the 1924 Coppa Acerbo at Pescara with an Alfa Romeo R.L. He founded Scuderia Ferrari in 1929, assembling a team of racing drivers and technical assistants that achieved eight victories in 22 competitions. He retired from racing in 1932 and focused on team management. During WWII his factory produced auto parts for Mussolini’s fascist government, and after the war he moved to Maranello. In 1946 he collaborated with G. Colombo to build the Ferrari Tipo125, which debuted at the 1947 Grand Prix of Monaco. Ferrari entered the first F1 World Championship in 1950 and won the 1951 British Grand Prix. His team dominated championships in 1956, 1958, 1961, and 1964, and achieved 14 Le Mans victories, including six consecutive from 1960-1965. In 1963 he rejected an $18 million Ford buyout offer, and from 1969 Fiat gradually took ownership. He remained managing director until 1971.

Personal life

Ferrari married Laura Dominica Garello; they had two sons: Alfredo Dino Ferrari and Piero Ferrari. Dino died of muscular dystrophy in 1956, which devastated Ferrari and ended his marriage. Afterward, Ferrari moved into a small apartment at his factory, living and working without vacation for years. He wore black tinted sunglasses daily in honor of his son. Ferrari had few friends and was known for his intense focus on his company.

Legacy

The Prancing Horse emblem defines Ferrari’s legacy, which he began using in 1932 after Countess de Biancoli suggested it. His Scuderia Ferrari team won multiple F1 championships, including a period of dominance with Michael Schumacher between 1999 and 2004. The 2003-2004 Enzo Ferrari model, built with F1 technology and limited to 399 units, embodied his vision of combining racing innovation with road cars. He was awarded the Order of Merit for Labour and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He is remembered as the founder of the Ferrari automobile company.
