Who was Herschell Gordon Lewis?

BIOGRAPHY

Herschell Gordon Lewis — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Herschell Gordon Lewis was born June 15, 1929 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Geraldine Waldman and Calvin Emmanuel Goldberg, Jewish immigrants from Poland and Russia. He attended Northwestern University, Roosevelt University, and Mississippi State University, and later taught English literature at the college level.

Career

Blood Feast 1963 gave birth to the splatter film. Lewis wrote, directed, and scored the movie for $8,000 in Miami. It became a box office hit despite harsh reviews. He continued with Two Thousand Maniacs 1964 and Color Me Blood Red 1965, often working with producer David F. Friedman. After Friedman left for California, Lewis directed more gore films including The Gruesome Twosome 1967 and The Wizard of Gore 1970. When big studios moved into splatter, he quit filmmaking and forged a successful advertising career. He wrote 32 books and earned a spot in the Direct Marketing Association’s Hall of Fame. He returned to film later with Herschell Gordon Lewis’s BloodMania, planned for 2015.

Personal life

Lewis married Margo Ellis on September 1, 1979, and they stayed together until his death. He had a son, Robert. Outside of film, he ran his own advertising firm, Communicomp, in Plantation, Florida. He died in his sleep on September 26, 2016 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at age 87.

Legacy

Herschell Gordon Lewis is called the Godfather of Gore for inventing the splatter subgenre with Blood Feast. His work inspired directors John Waters, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, and James Gunn. He won the Time Machine Award for his film contributions. Decades after their release, his old films still play in theaters.

Michael is the last person to read a profile before it goes live, which makes him the one who catches what everyone else missed. 5 years as a copy editor has given him a sharp sense for what's off. A wrong year, a vague credit, a sentence that almost makes sense but doesn't quite. He's especially thorough with filmographies. He'll tell you that's where most of the errors hide. He's right.
