Early life

John Major was born in Carshalton, Surrey, on 29 March 1943 to Tom Major-Ball, a retired circus acrobat aged 65, and Gwendolyn Minny Coates. The family moved to a cramped flat on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton, a poor part of South London, in the mid-1950s. He attended Cheam Common Primary School and Rutlish Grammar School, but left at 16 with O levels in History, English Language and English Literature, later regretting not staying in school. After a period of unemployment and odd jobs, he took a correspondence course in banking while working at the London Electricity Board in 1963, which launched his career in finance.

Career

John Major won the Conservative seat of Huntingdon in 1979 and rose through the ranks. He became Minister for Pensions and Social Security in 1985, Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 1987, Foreign Secretary for three months in 1989, and Chancellor of the Exchequer later that year. After Margaret Thatcher resigned in November 1990, Major won the Conservative leadership contest and became Prime Minister on 28 November 1990.

Britain’s humiliating withdrawal from the Exchange Rate Mechanism came in September 1992, even after his narrow victory in the 1992 general election. That same year he signed the Maastricht Treaty, deepening European integration and fracturing his party. Infighting weakened his authority, and he survived a leadership challenge in 1995 by calling a ballot and vowing to resign if he lost. He clung to office until the 1997 general election, when the Conservative Party suffered a landslide defeat to Tony Blair’s Labour Party, losing 179 seats. Major resigned as party leader immediately after the election but remained an MP until 2001.

He engaged in the first real negotiations with Sinn Féin to bring peace to Northern Ireland, laying the groundwork for the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.
