Early life

Kevin Bacon was born on July 8, 1958 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Ruth Hilda Holmes, an elementary school teacher, and Edmund Bacon, a prominent architect featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1964.

He attended Julia R. Masterman School, the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Arts, and Circle in the Square Theatre School. He also spent time at Albright College. His father’s public career and mother’s academic influence provided a stimulating childhood environment.

Career

Kevin Bacon made his film debut as Chip Diller in National Lampoon’s Animal House 1978. His breakthrough came with Diner 1982, directed by Barry Levinson. In 1984, he starred as Ren McCormack in Footloose, a role that made him a household name.

He later appeared in critically acclaimed films such as Apollo 13 1995 and Mystic River 2003. He won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his performance in Taking Chance 2009. He has also worked as a producer and director, and performs with his brother in the band The Bacon Brothers.

Personal life

Kevin Bacon married actress Kyra Sedgwick on September 4, 1988. The couple met on the set of the TV film Lemon Sky 1988. They have two children: son Travis born June 23, 1989 and daughter Sosie born March 15, 1992.

The family resides in New York City, but also owns a vacation farmhouse in Litchfield Hills, Connecticut. Bacon is also a musician, forming the band The Bacon Brothers with his older brother Michael.

Legacy

Kevin Bacon inspired the Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, which connects any actor to him within six film steps. He has appeared in five films nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture: JFK 1991, A Few Good Men 1992, Apollo 13 1995, Mystic River 2003, and Frost/Nixon 2008.

He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2003. The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game remains a fixture in pop culture.
