Early life

Marvin Gaye grew up in Washington, D.C., where his father, Marvin Gay Sr., a strict and abusive minister, regularly beat him. He attended William Syphax School and later Spingarn High School. His mother, Alberta, was a constant source of support. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1957 and was honorably discharged.

Career

Marvin Gaye began as a session drummer for Motown in 1960. His first hit was Stubborn Kind of Fellow 1962 but his breakthrough came with I Heard It Through the Grapevine 1968. In 1971, he released ‘What’s Going On’, a landmark album that gave him creative freedom. Later hits include ‘Let’s Get It On’ 1973 and Sexual Healing 1982, which won his first Grammys.

Personal life

Marvin Gaye married Anna Gordy, older sister of Motown founder Berry Gordy, in 1964; they divorced in 1977. He married Janis Hunter in 1977; they separated in 1982. He had two children: Nona Gaye and Marvin Gaye III. His father killed him on April 1, 1984 after an argument.

Legacy

Marvin Gaye’s influence spans R&B, soul, and quiet storm. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1990. The album ‘What’s Going On’ frequently appears on lists of the greatest albums. He earned the nickname Prince of Soul.
