When Michael Chekhov was four, his uncle Anton Chekhov wrote that he believed the boy had a growing talent. Michael was born in St. Petersburg on August 29, 1891, to Alexander Chekhov, Anton’s brother, and Natalya Golden, who was Jewish. From 1907 to 1911, he studied classic drama and comedy at the Suvorin Theater School in St. Petersburg, graduating with honors. There he met Konstantin Stanislavski, who invited him to join the Moscow Art Theatre, beginning a lifelong collaboration.

In 1913, Chekhov made his film debut in Tercentenary of the Romanov Dynasty, playing Tsar Mikhail Fyodorovich. The Russian Revolution of 1917 brought personal turmoil: his wife Olga Tschechowa divorced him, leading to depression and alcoholism. From 1922 to 1928, he led the second Moscow Art Theatre, blending Stanislavski’s method with yoga, theosophy, and psychology. He developed the Psychological Gesture. Fired in 1928 for his involvement with the Anthroposophic Society, he left Russia. In Europe, he taught and co-starred with his ex-wife in German films. With support from Sergei Rachmaninoff, he founded the Chekhov Theatre in 1931. He brought the company to New York in 1935 and moved permanently to the United States in 1938. In Hollywood, he played Dr. Alexander Brulov in Alfred Hitchcock’s Spellbound 1945, earning an Academy Award nomination. His book To the Actor was published in 1953 with a preface by Yul Brynner.

Chekhov’s first marriage to Olga Tschechowa ended in divorce in 1917 during the Russian Revolution. The separation devastated him and contributed to depression and alcoholism. He later married Ksenya Karlovna Ziller. With Olga, he had one daughter, Ada Tschechowa. In his later years, he reunited with Ada in California before his death.

The Chekhov Technique departed from Stanislavski’s system by emphasizing intuition and creative imagination. Among his students were Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood, Gregory Peck, Gary Cooper, and many others. His book To the Actor remains a standard in acting education. He received honors including Merited Artist of the RSFSR and Honorary Citizen of the Russian Empire. Chekhov is best remembered for his acting technique and his Oscar-nominated role in Spellbound.
