BIOGRAPHY

Shimon Peres — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Born in 1923 in Wiszniewo, Poland now Vishnyeva, Belarus, Shimon Peres emigrated with his family to British Palestine in 1934. His father Isaac Peres was a timber merchant, and his mother Sara Meltzer was a schoolteacher. Peres attended Ironi Alef High School and later studied at New York University and Harvard, though he did not complete a degree. His early experiences as a child in Poland, fleeing anti-Semitism, shaped his later political career.

Career

Peres entered politics in the 1940s, serving as Deputy Minister of Defense under David Ben-Gurion. He was elected to the Knesset in 1959 for the Mapai party. He held numerous ministerial positions including Minister of Transportation, Ministry of Defense, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He became Prime Minister in 1984, leading a national unity government. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 alongside Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat. After losing the 1996 election, he remained active in politics. In 2007, he was elected President of Israel, a role he held until 2014. Peres also authored books such as Battling for Peace 1995 and The New Middle East 1993.

Personal life

Peres married Sonya Gelman in May 1945, and they had three children: Tsvia, Yoni, and Chemi. His wife Sonya was a private person who avoided the public eye. Peres was a relative of actress Lauren Bacall; both shared the original surname Perske. He lived in Tel Aviv and later in Ramat Gan.

Legacy

Shimon Peres is remembered as a key architect of the Oslo Accords, which won him the Nobel Peace Prize. He received numerous honors including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2012 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014. After his death in 2016, he was eulogized worldwide as a visionary for peace. A commemorative postage stamp was issued by Israel in 2017. Peres’s legacy remains as a statesman who pursued peace for decades.
