Early life

At 15, Shyne was shot in the shoulder in Belize City, an incident that preceded his move into music. His father, Dean Barrow, was a prominent lawyer who became Prime Minister of Belize in 2008. He attended Wesley College before studying at New York City College of Technology.

Career

Shyne released his self-titled debut album in 2000; it achieved platinum status. His vocal style drew frequent comparisons to The Notorious B.I.G., and the album’s success launched his career. In 2001, he appeared in the film Save the Last Dance, adding acting credits. His second album, Godfather Buried Alive, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 in 2004, selling 158,000 copies in its first week. He was incarcerated at the time of its release, a rare accomplishment for a hip-hop artist. After his release, he turned to politics and returned to Belize, releasing the documentary series The Honorable Shyne in 2024.
