Glynis Johns

Glynis Johns, born in Pretoria, South Africa in 1923, won a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 1973 for Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music. Sondheim wrote 'Send in the Clowns' with shorter phrasing to suit her voice, which could not sustain long notes. She played Mrs. Winifred Banks in the 1964 film Mary Poppins and also portrayed mermaids in Miranda 1948 and Mad About Men 1954. Johns died at age 100 in 2024.
