Early life
Around 1939, Ali Farka Touré was born in Gourmararusse, a village near Timbuktu in northern Mali. He was raised in Niafunke, a semi-desert region where he learned traditional Malian instruments like the gurkel. Despite the lack of a formal birth record, his musical journey began early, absorbing the bluesy sounds of his ancestors.
His childhood home, Niafunke, later became a pilgrimage site for music lovers. Touré’s early influences included American blues and soul musicians such as Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and John Lee Hooker, which he blended with Malian traditions.
