Who is Lindsay Lohan?

BIOGRAPHY

Lindsay Lohan — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Lindsay Dee Lohan was born on July 2, 1986, in The Bronx, New York City, to Dina Lohan and Michael Lohan. Her mother, a former Wall Street analyst, and her father, a Wall Street trader, supported her early entry into modeling. At age three, she began working as a Ford model, appearing in over sixty commercials for brands like The Gap, Pizza Hut, and Wendy’s, including a Jell-O spot opposite Bill Cosby.

She attended Cold Spring Harbor Jr./Sr. High School, Sanford H. Calhoun High School, and Laurel Springs School. A straight-A student, she excelled in math and science and enjoyed gymnastics, swimming, ice skating, and reading. Her parents’ divorce and her father’s legal issues later contributed to a turbulent home life, but her professional drive remained strong.

Career

Lohan’s acting debut came in 1996 when she was cast as Ali Fowler on the soap opera Another World, a role she played until July 1997. Oscar-nominated writer Nancy Meyers chose her to play estranged twin sisters in the Disney remake The Parent Trap 1998, which earned Lohan a Young Artist Award for Best Leading Young Actress and widespread acclaim. This led to a three-movie deal with Disney, with television films Life-Size 2000 opposite Tyra Banks and Get a Clue 2002.

After a brief hiatus in 2001, Lohan returned in the hit Freaky Friday 2003 opposite Jamie Lee Curtis, a remake that generated over $160 million worldwide and won her the MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Female. She followed with the title role in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen 2004 and then the high-school comedy Mean Girls 2004, which grossed $86 million in the US and established her as a bankable star. Her salary rose to $7.5 million for Just My Luck 2006. She also starred in Bobby 2006, Herbie: Fully Loaded 2005, and A Prairie Home Companion 2006.

In 2004, she launched a music career with her debut album Speak, which earned platinum certification. Later ventures included her own fashion line 6126 in 2009 and a self-tanning spray line called Sevin Nyne, as well as a role as artistic designer for the fashion house Ungaro. She continued acting with roles in Machete 2010 and various television appearances.

Personal life

Lohan moved to Los Angeles after Freaky Friday, sharing an apartment with actress Raven-Symoné. She dated pop star Aaron Carter briefly and later dated DJ Samantha Ronson from 2008 to March 2009. In November 2021, she announced her engagement to financier Bader Shammas, and the couple married in 2022. Their son, Luai Shammas, was born in 2023.

Lohan’s personal life includes legal and health struggles. She entered rehab in January 2007 and faced multiple DUI arrests, which resulted in jail sentences and probation violations. In 2011, she served 12 days in jail for grand theft after stealing a necklace. She revealed she suffered a miscarriage while filming her reality show Lindsay in 2014. Lohan has asthma and underwent an emergency appendectomy in 2007.

Legacy

Lohan’s early film work, particularly The Parent Trap, Freaky Friday, and Mean Girls, defined teen cinema in the early 2000s and influenced a generation of young actors. Mean Girls, written by Tina Fey, remains frequently quoted and referenced. Lohan was the youngest person to host the MTV Movie Awards in 2004 and won an award that same night.

Despite personal setbacks, she has maintained a loyal fan base and continues to act. She has been parodied in media but also credited with inspiring actors like Amanda Seyfried and Victor Formosa. Her fashion lines and music career, including the platinum album Speak, demonstrate her versatility. Lohan is remembered for her natural comic timing and dramatic range, especially in her collaborations with director Mark Waters and Jamie Lee Curtis.
