Who was Jean Paul Getty?

BIOGRAPHY

Jean Paul Getty — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

By age 24, Jean Paul Getty had already made his first million dollars. He was born in 1892 in Minneapolis to Sarah Catherine McPherson Risher and George Franklin Getty, a prominent lawyer. His father’s death in 1930 left an estate of $15,478,137; Getty received $500,000 in cash, which he used to expand his oil interests. He attended John H. Francis Polytechnic High School and Harvard-Westlake School, then studied at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Southern California, and Magdalen College. These educational experiences and his father’s business acumen set the stage for his career in oil.

Career

Getty’s first oil strike came in 1915, when he bought a $500 interest in a lease on a farm south of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Three days after striking oil, he realized $11,850 from his share of the profits. After the 1929 crash, he purchased stocks at record low prices and took over Tide Water Associated Oil Company, one of the ten largest in America. He offered King Saud $9.5 million plus a share of profits for Middle East oil concessions, investing nearly $30 million before the venture paid off. In 1953, one of history’s largest oil strikes enriched him by hundreds of millions. He also allowed Warner Brothers to film Rebel Without a Cause 1955 at his empty Los Angeles mansion for $200 per day.

Personal life

Getty married five times: Jeannette Demont 1923-1925, Allene Ashby 1926-1928, Adolphine Helmle 1928-1932, Ann Rork 1932-1935, and Theodora Lynch 1939-1958. He had five sons: George Franklin Getty II, Jean Ronald Getty, John Paul Getty Jr., Gordon Getty, and Timothy Getty, who died young in 1958. He also fathered a daughter, Paula Eckstrom, with Elsie Marie Eckstrom. In 1933, he divorced Adolphine Helmle, paying her $60,000 in cash and $110 per month for their son. He was a friend of actor Christopher Lee, allowing Lee to use his Sutton Place home for his honeymoon in 1961. In 1959, Getty purchased Sutton Place, a 72-room estate in Surrey that once belonged to King Henry VIII, for a bargain $140,000.

Legacy

The J. Paul Getty Museum opened in 1974 on his 64-acre Malibu estate. Getty funded its construction with $18 million and provided a $40 million endowment. Upon his death in 1976, he bequeathed 21% of Getty Oil stock to the museum, worth approximately $700 million. The museum remains one of the world’s richest cultural institutions. One of the world’s first billionaires, Getty made his fortune through strategic oil risk-taking and investments.
