At age 5, Brittany Murphy told Burt Reynolds and George Segal she would be a star. She was born on November 10, 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia to Sharon Kathleen Murphy and Angelo Joseph Bertolotti. Her father, of Italian descent, moved the family to Edison, New Jersey to be closer to his siblings. She began performing in regional theater at 9 and landed national commercials by 13.

Her father’s involvement with organized crime led her parents to use her mother’s maiden name, Murphy, to protect her career. After her parents divorced, she and her mother moved to Burbank, California, where she landed her first television role on Blossom 1990.

Murphy made her television debut on Blossom 1990 and landed a starring role on Drexell’s Class 1991. Her film debut, Clueless 1995, featured her as Tai opposite Alicia Silverstone.
