Who was Christopher Plummer?

BIOGRAPHY

Christopher Plummer — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer arrived on December 13, 1929 in Toronto, Ontario. His father, John Orme Plummer, sold securities, and his mother, Isabella Mary Abbott, worked as a secretary. Only child, Plummer grew up in Senneville, Quebec, spending summers at his great-grandfather’s estate. That great-grandfather, Sir John Abbott, had been Canada’s third prime minister. Plummer attended the High School of Montreal and trained as a concert pianist before turning to acting. He spoke English and French fluently from his bilingual upbringing.

Career

Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music 1965 became Plummer’s breakout film role — a performance he later publicly criticized. He played Sherlock Holmes in Murder by Decree 1979, Mike Wallace in The Insider 1999, and Dr. Rosen in A Beautiful Mind 2001. For The Last Station 2009 he earned his first Academy Award nomination. At age 82, he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Beginners 2010, the oldest actor to do so. A third nomination followed for All the Money in the World 2017 as J. Paul Getty. On stage, Plummer won Tony Awards for Cyrano 1974 and Barrymore 1997; he was also nominated for King Lear 2004. Two Emmy Awards added to his collection, including for Arthur Hailey’s the Moneychangers 1977.

Personal life

Tammy Grimes became his first wife in 1956; they had one child, actress Amanda Plummer, before divorcing in 1960. Patricia Lewis was his second wife from 1962 to 1967. In 1970 he married Elaine Taylor, a former dancer who helped him overcome alcohol dependency. He credited her from the Oscar stage in 2012. Plummer remained a Canadian citizen, living with Taylor on a 30-acre estate in Weston, Connecticut. He died at home on February 5, 2021 at age 91 from complications of a fall.

Legacy

The Triple Crown of Acting — Oscar, Emmy, Tony — belonged to Plummer. At 82, his Oscar win for Beginners made him the oldest acting winner, a record that still stands. Canada appointed him Companion of the Order of Canada in 1968, its highest civilian honor. A star on Canada’s Walk of Fame followed in 1998, and a commemorative postage stamp appeared in 2021. Actors regard his Hamlet, Iago, and Lear as definitive. He inspired actors across generations and remains a cultural icon in Canada and beyond.
