BIOGRAPHY

Reese Witherspoon — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

At age 7, Reese Witherspoon began modeling in Nashville, Tennessee, after spending her first four years in Wiesbaden, Germany where her father served as a lieutenant colonel in the US Army reserves. Born Laura Jeanne Reese Witherspoon on March 22, 1976 in New Orleans, Louisiana, she is the daughter of Betty Witherspoon, a registered nurse with a Ph.D. in pediatric nursing, and John Draper Witherspoon, a military surgeon. By age 11, she had placed first in a Ten-State Talent Fair, an early sign of her acting talent.

She attended Harpeth Hall, an all-girls school in Nashville, graduating in 1994. During high school, she worked as an office production assistant for the film Devil in a Blue Dress 1995 for extra credit. Her early work in modeling and commercials led her to acting.

Career

In 1990, at age 14, Witherspoon landed her first major acting role as a tomboy in Robert Mulligan’s The Man in the Moon 1991. The role earned her rave reviews and led to supporting parts in Jack the Bear 1993 and A Far Off Place 1993. After high school, she briefly attended Stanford University to study English literature but left to star in Fear 1996 with Mark Wahlberg and Freeway 1996 with Kiefer Sutherland, becoming a rising star.

Her breakthrough came in 2001 when she played Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, a box-office hit that made her one of Hollywood’s top female draws. She followed with Sweet Home Alabama 2002, which grossed over $100 million. In 2005, she portrayed June Carter Cash in Walk the Line, winning the Academy Award for Best Actress, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award. She starred in romantic comedies including Four Christmases 2008 and How Do You Know 2010. In 2012, she co-founded the production company Pacific Standard with Bruna Papandrea, optioning Gone Girl and Wild. She produced and starred in Wild 2014, earning another Oscar nomination.

She then had a relationship with Jake Gyllenhaal from January 2007 to November 2009, after meeting him on the set of Rendition 2007.

In March 2011, she married talent agent Jim Toth at her ranch in Ojai, California, wearing a custom Monique Lhuillier gown. Their son Tennessee Toth was born on September 27, 2012. The couple divorced in 2023. She remains best friends with Selma Blair, Chelsea Handler, and Renée Zellweger.

Legacy

Witherspoon’s performance as Tracy Flick in Election 1999 was ranked #45 on Premiere magazine’s 100 Greatest Performances of All Time in 2006. She is one of 13 actresses to have won the Academy Award, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, and SAG Award for the same performance Walk the Line. In 2010, she received the 2,425th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was honored with the MTV Generation Award in 2011, only the second female recipient.

Through Pacific Standard, she championed female-driven stories, adapting bestsellers like Gone Girl and Wild. Her influence extends to television, with her production company Type A Films. She combined commercial success with critical acclaim, particularly for her Oscar-winning role as June Carter Cash.
