Who was Princess Diana?

BIOGRAPHY

Princess Diana — early life, career, personal life, and legacy.

Early life

On July 1, 1961, Diana Frances Spencer was born at Park House on the Sandringham estate. Her parents were Frances Shand Kydd and Earl John Spencer, and she had an older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and a brother, John Spencer, who died shortly after birth. Diana attended Riddlesworth Hall School and later West Heath Girls’ School, where she showed talent in music, dance, and sports but did not distinguish herself academically. She also studied at the Institut Alpin Videmanette in Switzerland, but her shy demeanor earned her the press nickname Shy Di.

Career

Diana’s 1995 interview with BBC’s Panorama, watched by 23 million people in the UK, reshaped public perception of the monarchy. Following her engagement to Prince Charles in 1981, she became the Princess of Wales and was enthusiastically received by the public. She undertook royal duties on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, but her unconventional approach to charity work set her apart. She worked with AIDS patients and campaigned to remove landmines. She also raised awareness about cancer and mental illness. She became a fashion leader in the 1980s and 1990s, and her photogenic appearances generated massive media attention.

Personal life

Diana married Prince Charles on July 29, 1981, at St Paul’s Cathedral. They had two sons: Prince William born 1982 and Prince Harry born 1984. The marriage became strained, leading to their separation in 1992 and divorce in 1996. Diana later had relationships with Dodi Fayed, whom she fell in love with after a food fight on his father’s yacht Jonikal. She was close friends with Michael Jackson and Elton John, and counted among her best friends Lúcia Flecha de Lima, Rosa Monckton, and Sarah Ferguson.

Legacy

Prince William and Prince Harry continue her charitable work. Her grandchildren include Prince George, Princess Charlotte, Prince Louis, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor. Her funeral in 1997 at Westminster Abbey featured Elton John performing Candle in the Wind rededicated to her. She is remembered as the People’s Princess, a global icon of compassion and style.
